Earlier this month at the DEFCON conference in Las Vegas, Alex Pisolov and Tony Kapela presented a paper on How a BGP man in the middle attack can be completed.
Their work proved that Internet traffic can be intercepted and altered without your knowledge. It is also possible for the hijacker to remain hidden.
This is a pretty worrying discovery and can not be solved easily without major cooperation between service providers. The issue has some serious consequences and effect all the users of the Internet.
