The latest venture by Google into the Internet Browser market, Google Chrome, has really caused a buzz. Nearly every story or blog from the mainstream has been trying to talk it down.
I for one really like the product. It has some minor bugs and issues, but after all it is only a beta product. The large volume of outspoken critics indicates to me that the main players are actually worried.
One Microsoft executive indicated in the press that the speed of the browser did not matter to the user experience. Of course users want the application to work, but aside from that the only factor they care about is speed.
Google is in a really good position and seems to be diversifying even more. So what is next for Google?
How about this one, Google OS? Google is probably the only organization who could pull it off.
We all want an operating system that runs the applications and games we like. So what would it need to do?
Google would need to buy or build an OS, add an emulator or virtualization layer for Windows applications, including direct sound and graphics features and add improved security mechanisms. Then develop or convince major developers to make a release for Google OS.
Microsoft has been so dominant for so long they really need a true competitor. Since the demise of Dr Dos nobody has seriously challenged them. Apple has a niche market but never threatened the Microsoft share.
If this were ever to happen then Google would be the new Microsoft.
