There is a lot of competition now in the server virtualization area. VMware™ has been well established for quite some time. You might have thought that Microsoft had turned the tide against the VMware ™ dominance. To some degree that is true.
VMware ™ has recently increased its license costs for its Virtual Infrastructure suite and got a new CEO, an Ex Microsoft employee, Paul Maritz.
VMware has been anything but stagnant, releasing VMware ™ ESX3i and VMware ™ Server 2.0 for free to potential customers.
Microsoft has also softened on the virtualization licensing, although not much. Hyper-V will be free in the RC2 release of Windows 2008. Obviously they are trying to dig into the market now.
So what is the difference between the Hyper-V and Esx3i installation processes? Well according to this nice little video it seems the difference is about 7 reboots and 20 minutes.
I haven’t worked directly with Hyper-V or Esx3i yet, so it was interesting to see the comparison.
