Information Technology is a constantly changing field, new products replace old ones. From Microsoft alone there are a range of new products flowing into mainstream environments. Some of these new applications and systems include:

  • Windows Server 2008 r2
  • Windows Server 2008
  • Windows 7
  • Microsoft SQL 2008
  • Exchange 2007

Just to name a few. If you are interested in these technologies how can you have a look at them?

One way is download the evaluation or beta software and install it on a virtual PC or virtual server you have. This is a great way to get a feel for how a new product may integrate with your current environment. But if you do not have access to a good broadband connection or have the ability to run a virtual PC or server effectively what then?

Luckily Microsoft has developed virtual environments for IT Professional and Developers to have a look at the products and scenarios. Microsoft calls these Virtual Labs (vlabs) and there is an MSDN and Technet version.

There are a large number of scenario labs ranging from Managing Active Directory to Enterprise Failover clustering.

The labs work in a similar manner to the labs your would do on a official Microsoft training course. Each lab has a learning objective and a time limit. You will also need to register using a Microsoft live passport account.

To run the Virtual Lab you will need:

  • IE 6.0 or higher
  • JavaScript enabled

You will also need to install the activeX control ‘Virtual Server VRMC Advanced Control’. You will be prompted to install this.

Once you have started the Lab the system launches and you are using product through a RDP connection. The system responds as any other virtual machine does.

It really is a great way to have a quick look at a new product and get some hands on practice without having to set up your own virtual environment.

Have a look, use it as an opportunity to enhance your knowledge and skills.
